NOBEL PRIZE WINNER AL GORE TO SPEAK ON GREEN CONSTRUCTION @ GREENBUILD

Edited by Jodi Summers

Nobel Prize winner and former Vice President Al Gore as the opening keynote speaker for USGBC’s annual Greenbuild International Conference & Expo being held Nov. 11-13, 2009, in Phoenix, Ariz.

“Al Gore’s impressive career and bipartisan outreach have helped elevate global climate change to the main street public consciousness,” said Rick Fedrizzi, President, CEO & Founding Chair, U.S. Green Building Council. “The role buildings play in our lives, our health, the economy and the global environment – including being responsible for 39% of the carbon emitted in the United States – means the built environment is a tremendous opportunity for us to make real change.”

Buildings in the United States are responsible for 39% of CO2 emissions, 40% of energy consumption, 13% water consumption and 15% of GDP per year, making green building a source of significant economic and environmental opportunity. Greater building efficiency can meet 85% of future U.S. demand for energy, and a national commitment to green building has the potential to generate 2.5 million American jobs.

Former Vice President Gore’s keynote address will kick off Greenbuild at the Opening Keynote & Celebration, taking place Nov. 11 at Chase Field, home of the Arizona Diamondbacks. The evening celebration will feature a musical performance by nine-time Grammy winner Sheryl Crow and an address from USGBC President, CEO & Founding Chair, Rick Fedrizzi.

Al Gore has championed awareness and action to confront global climate change since his earliest days in the U.S. Congress 30 years ago, and is regarded for his pioneering role in helping put one of the most important challenges of our time on the map, with his best-selling book and Academy Award-winning documentary, An Inconvenient Truth. In 2007, Gore was jointly awarded the Nobel Peace Prize with the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change for his environmental activism. In 1992, Gore published Earth in the Balance: Ecology and the Human Spirit and instituted environmental policy and initiatives in the Clinton-Gore Administration to help safeguard the environment.

Gore is cofounder and chairman of Generation Investment Management and multiplatform media company Current TV. He is a member of the Board of Directors of Apple Computer, Inc. and a senior advisor to Google, Inc. Gore is also Visiting Professor at Middle Tennessee State University in Murfreesboro, Tenn.

Greenbuild is the largest gathering of representatives from all sectors of the green building movement. Previous Greenbuild keynote speakers have included former President Bill Clinton in 2007 and Archbishop Desmond Tutu in 2008.

  1. The Energy Independence and Security Act of 2007 authorizes the Department to collaborate with the private sector, DOE’s National Laboratories, other federal agencies and non-governmental organizations to advance high-performance commercial green buildings. DOE’s Building Technologies Program will support High Performance Green Building activities in EISA 2007, including:

    *

    Technology research and development;
    *

    Sponsorship of pilot and demonstration projects across multiple climate zones;
    *

    Provision of technical assistance to encourage widespread technology adoption;
    *

    Development of training materials and programs for builders;
    *

    Public education on the need for efficiency in new and existing buildings;
    *

    Work with code-setting bodies to ensure technologies are properly deployed;
    *

    Analysis of incentives for builders, landlords, and tenants to ensure that cost-effective investments are made on a life-cycle basis; and
    *

    Development of a means for measurement and verification of energy savings.

    This new NLCBT will enable the labs and DOE to work closer on research, validation and commercialization priorities critical to the success of zero-net energy buildings.

  2. Al Gore is working on another book. “Our Choice,” slated for November, will make the case for ambitious action on climate change, all printed on recycled paper and with eco-friendly ink, at Huffington Post.

  3. Initiated in 1995, the Beachkeeper Water Quality Monitoring Program mobilizes
    volunteers to participate in the hands-on monitoring, data collection, and water
    sampling needed to assess the damage caused by urban runoff. Beachkeeper volunteers
    are educated about the causes and ramifications of storm water pollution and are
    trained to visually monitor the health of a stretch of coastline or creek. Data
    collected each month by Beachkeeper volunteers includes physical appearance, the
    amount and type of debris around storm drains, flow levels, and various wildlife
    observations. Volunteers are also trained on the scientific techniques for taking
    water samples from these drains, which are then analyzed in Baykeeper’s lab or sent
    to a certified lab for metals analysis.

  4. Pick up a box of crackers and the nutrition label on the side tells you how much fat, sodium and other ingredients you will find inside. Rick Fedrizzi, president of the U.S. Green Building Council, would like to see a similar label on the side of every building, disclosing the quality of the air, water and other environmental factors inside.

  5. Governors of 35 states have already filed suit against the Federal Government for imposing unlawful burdens upon them. It only takes 38 (? of the 50) States to convene a Constitutional Convention.

    Proposed 28th Amendment to the United States Constitution…
    “Congress shall make no law that applies to the citizens of the United States that does not apply equally to the Senators and/or Representatives;
    and, Congress shall make no law that applies to the Senators and/or Representatives that does not apply equally to the citizens of the United States .”

  6. I was looking for crucial information on this subject. The information was important as I am about to launch my own portal. Thanks for providing a missing link in my business. Sometimes this is not so easy to see and you have to be patient and read through the report carefully.
